Lagos: 299 Candidates Jostle For 27 NASS Seats

The Lagos State office of INEC, yesterday, published a list of candidates for various elective positions in the 2019 elections.

The list, cutting across all political parties, shows that 50 candidates from various political parties will contest for the three senatorial seats: Lagos West, Central and East, while 249 candidates will battle to represent 24 House of Representatives constituencies.

The publication of the list is in line with the provision of Section 31 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).

Section 31 (1) states that, “Every political party shall not later than 60 days before the date appointed for general elections under the provisions of this act, submit to the commission, in the prescribed forms, the list of candidates the party proposes to sponsor at the elections provided that the commission shall not reject or disqualify candidate(s).

Furthermore, Section 31(3) states that, “The commission shall within seven days of receipt of the personal particulars of a candidate, publish same in the constituency where the candidate intends to contest the election.”

However, as at the time of filing this report, not all the candidates’ names had been pasted at the local governments making up the senatorial and federal constituencies.

Spokesman of the commission in Lagos, Mr. Femi Akinbiyi, said INEC had up to 11pm yesterday to publish the list, saying by tomorrow people should go to their local governments to view the lists.
